The Concoction

My party drink recipe. A lot of lime, a lot of ginger, and a container big enough to make people ask questions.

This is what my friends and I make at cons. You can also put it in a punch bowl at a house party. Same drink, less hotel-room logistics.

“It doesn’t taste good. It tastes like intention.”

Why this has its own page

In the con hotel room, my friends and I make The Concoction in the largest vessel we can find. That is the setup. There is no fancy bar equipment involved.

I remember one of my friends telling me back at the hotel after the final con rave:

“You gotta keep that shit under wraps.”

Nah.

So here's the recipe. Make it your own, know what you're pouring, and have a happy con.

What goes in it

This is the whole batch. Please do not read this list as one serving.

  • 0.75 L clear spirit — tequila, vodka, gin, rum; your choice.
  • 1.5 L sake, soju or diluted vodka. Check the bottle. Those can be very different strengths.
  • 1 L water or a mixer you like.
  • Juice of 5 limes. Yes, five.
  • Juice of 2 knobs of ginger.
  • 1 tablespoon turmeric and a pinch of black pepper.
  • Frozen fruit. Berries, cherries, whatever you want in there.

Mix it in a large, food-safe pitcher or punch bowl, add the frozen fruit, and stir. Give it another stir before pouring; the spices settle.

For the house-party version: oversized punch bowl, mismatched ladle, red Solo cups. Measure what goes into the cups, though. A cup is not a unit of alcohol.

For the nerds doing the math

The calculator preset uses 8 oz at 14.5% ABV — about 1.9 US standard drinks. That's an example serving, not a measurement of whatever you just mixed.

Your bottles and your pours set the actual strength. Check the labels, work out your batch's approximate ABV, and edit the preset to match.

Kiwi and meat soup

The snack situation is mostly kiwi, bone broth or slow-simmered meat soup, and anything else that sounds good.

Afterward? More kiwi. More meat soup.

I stand by the kiwi. This is a food preference, not a recovery protocol. Eat like you love yourself.

A couple of things before you make it

Tell people what's in the bowl and how strong it is. Keep water and alcohol-free options separate and easy to find. If you're at a con, follow the venue's rules. Sort out your ride or where you're staying before you start drinking.

I'm sharing a drink recipe, not promising you a better morning. Fruit, spices and electrolytes don't cancel out the alcohol. Leave the pre-workout and stimulants out of it.

Pace yourself. I want the story afterward to be about the con.
